Hair Loss - Eyebrow loss

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 9/28/2006

Question
i am losing my eyebrows, i get a lot of puss filled pimples around there and at the base of some hairs there are raised bumps. many hairs that are weakened and that are about to fall out have these small white (sometimes gooey - mostly not)things connected to the base of the individual hair. i do not know if this is an infection or a natural thing but I am losing lots of hair due to this

Answer
The white bumps you describe on the hair is normal. The white bump is the hair follicle. If you are developing puss filled pimples then you need to treat with topical antibiotics. Benzaclin which is a prescription can be very effective just applied at night. In some cases antibiotics may be helpful for this skin condition. Hair loss has many causes: thyroid disease, hormonal abnormalities, oral medicaitons, severe stress, systemic diseases like lupus, going on or off of birth control pills. Thus, blood work to make sure there is not a systemic cause of your hair loss. Topical Rogaine which is over the counter can help reduce hair loss.
