About Kimberly Belk
Expertise
As a registered nurse, I can help you understand the type of hair loss you suffer and the goals of your physician`s treatment plan. As someone who suffers alopecia, I can explain treatment options and coping with the disease. Part of coping with hair loss is finding ways to "look natural", and as the owner of Belk Wigs, I can recommend several different types of hair replacement options based on the specific needs you may have related to your particular type of hair loss.

Hair Loss - Hair Loss

Question
I am taking the following medication for high blood pressure:
Valsartan  320 mg daily
Solatol:   160 mg daily
Terazosin: 5 mg  daily
Norvasc:  5 mg   daily
My hair has thinnig for more than one year.  Seen in my comb every morning.  At times large gobs appear, especially after a shower.  Recently commented on by a barber that I hadn't seen in nine months.
My dermatologist has indicated that it may be caused by one or more of my medications.
Which one is apt to be the cause ?

Answer
Dear George,

I hate to tell you this, but all the medications you are taking have the potential to cause hair loss. The medications you are on treat high blood pressure in different ways. Without getting too technical, some meds lower pressure by dialating coronary arteries, some work by lower venous pressure as blood returns to the heart. Looking at the med profile you are taking, I am assuming that in addition to high blood pressure you may also have coronary artery disease, and possibly have had angioplasty or stents done to your coronary arteries. While the hair loss is distressing, I strongly recommend that you continue taking all these medications as prescribed by your cardiologist or other physician.

There is a hair care program I suggest you try that you can buy at Sally Beauty Supply Company stores called Nurti-Ox. To find your local Sally store, go to www.sallybeauty.com, click on the store locator link and enter your zip code. You can also read about the product on Sally's web site.

Thank you for your question. Take care and God Bless,
Kimberly Belk
