Hair Loss - Hair after accutane (acne medication)

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 6/30/2005

Question
Hi there;

I took the acne drug accutane about three years ago, which really works on drying out the skin. SInce then my hair seems much dryer aswell. I notice that when I shower there are quite a few hairs falling out. I think this may be due to my scalp being dry?

Perhaps these are dead hairs, ready to come out anyway - but I don't know - how would I?

I was wondering what I can do to prevent hair loss, and to keep my hair as long as possible?

Many Thanks

Answer
Accutane can cause hair loss but it is usually during the time you are on the medication. I may also cause the oil glands of the scalp to produce less oil. Use a shampoo with a condtioner. The use of Rogaine may help bring back recently lost hair and Propecia is the best medicine to prevent more loss.
