Question I know you can't diagnose a disease, but I am desperate for some information. Some time ago I noticed my hair on top thinning and was told to use rogaine. It helped a lot. Then a few weeks ago it seemed to not be working and the hair loss became extreme even at the back of my hair so I started using the 5 per cent solution. Now just today I see the hair going from my eyebrows and arms and everywhere I have hair. I have the first appointment I could get with a dermatologist which is 2 weeks from now. Is this type of disorder permanent? After the diagnosis could there be any treatments, or am I doomed to be this way forever? I have read that if it is an autoimmune disease that nothing can be done. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. I have just met a wonderful man after being alone for many years and I know if this is permanent that he will not want to stay with me. I am so upset I can hardly work and can't sleep or eat.
Thank you for any insite on this condition and what might have caused it.

Answer Causes of hair loss include the following: thyroid disease, going on or off of birth control pills, severe stress, hormonal abnormalities as in polycystic ovarian disease, too much Dheas a hormone, too much testosterone a hormone, recent surgery, recent pregnancy, infections of the scalp, infestations of the scalp, oral medications that cause hair loss, systemic disease like lupus or others and last but not least is genetics. Thus, the first thing to do is to get blood work to make sure there are no systemic causes of hair loss. You can also get a biposy of the scalp which will help determine the cause of your hair loss and make sure it is not scaring. The only FDA approved medication for women is Rogaine for Women. Biotin 2.5mg per day also helps hair growth and this medication is over the counter.
