Hair Loss - LOCAH or PCOS?

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 10/1/2006

Question
In 99 I was diagnosed w/ elevated angroden levels; My doctor in NYC said I had LOCAH and put me on Dexa (later OCPs and Spiro) which was followed by a change in body fat distribution and raid weight loss. Through the years I have been placed in the PCOS category b/c I do not have the genetic mutation for CAH. So here is the problem, last year I appeared to loose weight (I believe it was my distribution due to no pounds shedding but people noticing), headaches, sensitivity to light, bruising followed by rapid hair shedding. So, I was placed back on Spiro and OCP along with the Dexa which was never discontinued. I went to a PCOS specialist in NYC who stated that I did not have PCOS...If I did it was a rare form that he has never seen. So, I moved on until ten months later...now, it is happening all over again. Does anyone have any advice? My hair wont stop falling out and I am becoming so discouraged. I am starting to feel like I must wait until science finds the answers to these endocrine problems.

Answer
hi,
I'm sorry to read about the lack of specificity of the cause and do not know how to help on that. Your endocrinologist is your best source of information on that. The spironolactone is the best blocker of DHT I know of that you can take and you may speak to the endocrinologist about taking Dutasteride which blocks almost all the DHT. It is used for men with prostate problems and stays in the blood stream for months --so you should not get pregnant while taking it since it can affect a male fetus developement.
