Question I was hoping you could tell me what your patient based experience with side effects from propecia has been. I started thinning in my late teens-early twenties. I used propecia for early and had some issues with erectile dysfunction. I stopped. Years later tried again and had no issues, but stopped again due to cost. I able to restart and keep using it now, but I have read tons of horror stories on-line regarding permanent side-effects such as erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, and worst of all infertility. Is this true? The propecia site suggests <2% intitially and <0.3% after 5 yrs for men affected with "non-permanent" side effects. The net suggest otherwise. What is true? Any advice on re-starting the medication. Thank you so much.
Answer The scientific studies and my own personal experience with the medication for over 20 years would indicate that less than one person in 400 has a problem with Propecia if they stay on it for two years. Two percent of the paients on the placebo pill had sexual dysfunction which would make me believe the stuff you read online is by people with psychological problems that they do not want to admit to and will blame Propecia instead. My advice it to get on it and stay on it. I have taken it for nearly 20 years and I have had my 20 year old son on it for one year.
