Subject: Rogaine and frontal hair loss

Question
Hello, two years ago I began to experience hair loss mainly in the frontal area of my head. At first, my doctor recommended taking propecia. This has stopped the rapid loss of hair but my hair is still slowly thinning away.
As such, my doctor recommended taking rogaine. The problem is that the box says rogaine does no good with frontal hair loss. Will taking rogaine help me at all?

Thanks and sorry if I wrote to much

Answer
Rogaine works anywhere there are hairs. It is more impressive when it works on the crown but it does work in the front too. If you are losing hair despite being on Propecia you may want to ask your doctor for a prescription for Proscar which is 5 mg finasteride and take it daily. If after 6 months you are still thinning the next step is to take dutasteride which is Avodart. Propecia lowers your DHT by 65% ,  Proscar 70% , and Avodart 90%. Obviously Avodart at 90% should be better but it stays in your blood stream much longer and if you had any side effects it would take months to get over them. I have many patients on Avodart but they all were on Propecia for a few years with no bad side effects and were in the 15% group who still lost hair. None of my patients on Avodart have had a problem with side effects. They are the same as those with Propecia.
