I am a 36 year-old female. My hair has been gradually thinning since my 20's. I've tried Rogaine, but it made my hair shed even more because of the excess handling and massaging of each application. My mother's hair has thinned over the years, as has her sister's hair. But both of them experienced thinning after menopause. Also, my hair texture has gone from medium/coarse to fine and lost most of its natural wave. My hairdresser said this may be due to perming, although I've only had a handful of perms in my life. Does this type of hair loss sound like any you've encountered? Is it likely that I will continue to lose my hair after menopause?
Thank you,
Laura
Answer The first thing that needs to be done is to make sure that you have no systemic cause for the hair thinning. Causes of hair loss and thinning are: thyroid disease, hormonal problems, medications, diet, systemic diseases such as lupus, going on or off of birth control pills, hair infestations, liver disease, kidney disease, anemia, polycystic disease, genetics, adrenal disease, recent surgery, pregnancy, infections, and stress. If the blood work shows not cause for hair thinning then the cause is most likely genetic. Treatment for is is Appearex which is over the counter and taken one per day. You may want to try Rogaine Shampoo then you would not have as much handling
