Hair Loss - chest hair

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 11/2/2005

Question
The hair on my chest (I'm male) is uneven - less grows on one side than the other. Is there a way I can get hair where it isn't.

Also can I increase the ammount of hair on my chest generally.

Thanks.

Answer
Hair growth is generally genetic. Thus, if one side of your chest grows more hair than the other this is difficult to remedy. You can try over the counter Rogaine for Men which is a topical medication FDA approved to grow hair. If you do grow hair, you will have to continually use the the Rogaine. If your hair growth for the scalp is normal you would not need to have blood work to make sure there is no systemic cause of your lack. Thyroid disease can cause hair loss in men and women.
