Hair Loss - eyebrow hair loss

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 10/3/2006

Question
I have been losing eybrow hairs, on the inside part, apparently due to white heads. The white heads come out, especially after sweating from excercise, and push out the eyebrow hair with it. And new hairs are not growing back afterwards. I've tried Sodium Sulfacetamide to help stop these white bumps and it has helped some, but the eyebrow hairs are still falling out, albeit at a slower rate. Is there anything that can grow back some of these hairs? Thank you very much for any help you can give.

Answer
I would first try another topical antibiotic to control the white heads. There is a prescription topical called Evoclin that is a foam and penetrates the skin very well. Another option is to take antibiotics like Doryx or Solodyn which usually work. Now your hair can be falling out for other reasons other than pustules: thyroid disease, hormone therapy, abnormal hormones, alopecia areata which is genetic and is treated with intralesional cortisone injections. I would recommend that you visit your local dermatologist to make sure of the reason for your hair loss.
