Hair Loss - generic propecia

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 9/30/2004

Question
I was prescribed propecia for hair loss. I am 34 and in the very beginning stage of hair loss.
I found generic propecia selling at menshealthpills.com $59 for 90 pills.
Are these as effective?

Answer
If they are 1mg finasteride they should be just as effective.
It might be possible for them to take a 5mg Proscar pill and grind it up making 5 capsules of 1mg finasteride and calling it geneeric Propecia. It happens to be breaking the law in that Merck has a patent on 1mg finasteride for hair loss and will not allow pharmacists to dispense the 5 mg version to be split up by the patient despite the substantial savings to the patient. So the answer is yes if is finasteride and no if it claims to be as good but is not the same chmemical.
