Hair Loss - hair loss related to zoloft

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 5/2/2006

Question
after starting on zoloft @100 mg daily I noted my hair coming out in handfuls. I did not make the connection to zoloft at that time. When I quit taking it after 6 months the hair loss stopped. Will my hair grow back? I have less than half what I used to. Is there anything I can do to help the hair come back.

Answer
You have what is called a Telogen Effluvium. This means that the medication Zoloft pushed the hair cycle into shedding. The hair should recover within 11/2 years. You could use Rogaine for Women which is over the counter to help with hair regrowth. In the PDR which tells of side effects of medication Alopecia or hair loss was number 4 for Zoloft.
