Hair Loss - inflammed scalp

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 6/7/2004

Question
------------thanks for the response. I actually have elidel for my face. never thought to use it on my scalp. does it come in any other solution other than creme. will the rogaine not work opn an infmalled scalp? I tried it once and shed for over the normal time..like 3 months. wouldn't a chronic tel. effluvium just be a shedding. since I have this redness that has returned after each pregnancy, would you think it was a chronic tel. effluvium? I thought that that when there was no other med. condition found. thanks-------------

Question -
I have had a chronic inflammed scalp and have been dx. as havibg seb derm. I saw Dr. Whiting in Dallas and he did a biopsy. he dx. me as having diffuse alopecia. ALl the inflammation went away when I was pregnant, and has returned after both pregnancies. I ahve found nothing to work. I have tried everything from shampoos to steroid oils( dermasmooth) to the steroid drops. what do you think I should do? would you try rogaine? how can I get my scalp to turn white again instead of this blotchy pink color? thanks
Answer -
Dr. Whiting is a world renown expert on hair. So, either see him again or the dermatologist who sent you to him. I would not use Rogaine until the pinkness cleared. It could be that you are allergic to some chemical in the base in the hair products you use. You should see a dermatolgist to get allergy patch tests to these chemicals. It could be propylene glycol, or a hair dye. Constant use of strong topical steroids may not be a good idea. If it is seb. derm you may benefit from a two week course of oral Nizoral 200 mg / day. Your dermatologist may put you on Loprox shampoo and perhaps Loprox solution as well.
Answer -
MS is a condition which can cause the body extra stress and therefore may cause a chronic telogen effluvium. Rogaine might help the problem. You may want to ask your dermatolgist if you could go to using Elidel Cream at beditme over the pink areas. Elidel is a new medication which suppresses inflamation in a number of conditions we used to use steroids for. If you were my patient I would tell you to stop the topical cortisone and go to Elidel applied over 5% Rogaine at beditme.

Answer
Elidel only comes as a cream as far as I know. I do not suggest you apply Rogaine to inflammed skin.
Please see your dermatologist for further evaluation and explantion of therapy and what a chronic telogen effluvium is and whether that is what you have.
