Question Hi. I am a 24 year old male with some thinning at the crown and receding hairline. I was on propecia for 8 months and the receding part and the crown part was still getting a little worse so I switched to Avodart last month. Have you found Avodart to halt the future hairloss or just slow it down? Have you noticed your young patients regrowing any hair when they started Avodart. After how long did they notice it working? thanks for your reply.
Answer There is no way to predict the outcome of the switch to Avodart. It should be more effective in slowing hair loss and perhaps even stop it at this point. I am sure there are patients who continue to lose hair despite taking Avodart but they probably represent only 5% of the population and if they didn't take it they would have lost a lot more hair. The analogy I like to use is brakes on a car. If you are going down a very steep hill and you apply your brakes but the car doesn't stop you may want to pull on the emergency brake as well. There is still no guarantee you will stop but at least you did all you could. There are some vehicles which are too heavy to stop with normal braking just as there are men with an inherited balding pattern which can not be completely inhibited. So my advice is to keep taking Avodart and hope you stop the balding process.
