Hair Loss - risk of taking avodart

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 5/22/2007

Question

i have taken propecia for about 8 months now. at the start, the results were amazing, i started growing new hairs and all of my hair was thickening in general. also, i was barely seeing any hairs on my pillow, bathroom sink, etc. Now, I am losing a good amount of hair and I am starting to see bald spots on the side of my head. Should I turn to Avodart now? what are the short term/long term risk for taking avodart?

Answer
I do not know of any long term risks of taking Avodart. I have been taking it myself for the past two years. It is possible the loss is a temporary shedding caused by something stressful 2 months ago. See your dermatologist to confirm that it is male pattern baldness that has not responded to Propecia which is the problem.
