About Kimberly Belk
Expertise
As a registered nurse, I can help you understand the type of hair loss you suffer and the goals of your physician`s treatment plan. As someone who suffers alopecia, I can explain treatment options and coping with the disease. Part of coping with hair loss is finding ways to "look natural", and as the owner of Belk Wigs, I can recommend several different types of hair replacement options based on the specific needs you may have related to your particular type of hair loss.

Hair Loss - significant hair loss

Expert: Kimberly Belk - 10/1/2004

Question
I am on a large number of new medications and am now suffering a significant hair loss and rash over 2/3 of my body.  Could it be an alergic reaction to any of the following meds?
Diovan, Isosorbide Mononitrate, starlix, zetia, amiloride or toprol xl.  I appreciate any help.

Answer
Hi Lynn,

From the list, I would say that you have a heart condition with high blood pressure. Unfortunately, Toprol XL can cause hair loss, as can Zetia, Isosorbide and Diovan, and combined with the rash, I think it's safe to say that you are having a reaction to one, or the combination of meds you are taking. Please talk this over with your doctor. While the hair loss is distressing, as a RN, I am more concerned with the rash you have developed. Allergic reactions can be mild rashes or serious, life threatening situations and should be evaluated by your MD as soon as possible.

Thank you for your question!

Sincerely,
Kimberly Belk
