Hair Loss - spironolactone and hair loss

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 10/4/2006

Question
I recently started taking spironolactone at 125 mg. About two weeks after taking I started to shed a ton of hair. I stayed on it for about six weeks and then dropped the dosage to 75 mg. I still continue to shed. I think I have lost about 20% of my hair. My doctor wants me to take 200 mg. I'm afraid to take it and afraid not to. What is your opinion?

Answer
Hair shedding usually takes place 4 to 6 weeks after the stressful incident. Spironolactone is commonly used for women with acne,or too much facial hair and for androgenetic alopecia. The dose is commonly between 50 and 200mg/day. Your doctor has a better idea of what your hormonal problems are and is the best judge of how much you should take. From what you have written I suspect the shedding is from some other cause and spironolactone should be increased.
