Hair Loss - spironolactone

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 9/27/2006

Question
Hi,

I have been put on spironolactone on three different occassions and each time after two weeks of starting my hair sheds like crazy. It will go from an average of 30 a day to 200-300 a day. Is this normal? I feel like it is my only answer for androgenetic alopecia but I lose so much hair in the process.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Suzanne

Answer
The spironolcatone is causing what is called a Telogen Effluvium. A telogen effluvium is where your hair cycle is pushed toward the shedding phase instead of the growing phase. Your options are to go on Spironolactone and use Rogaine for Women to see if this will help slow down the telogen effluvium. If you are on spironolactone long enough then the shedding will stop as your body gets used to the medication. You do not have many options if you want to continue taking spironolactone.
