Hair Loss - where to start

Expert: Peter J. Panagotacos, M.D. - 10/4/2006

Question
I am a 33 year old female experiencing hair thinning for the past year. I would like to know what tests that you recommend I have the dermatologist start with. I know thyroid and iron. Which others do you do with new patients? Do you recommend to start with certain tests and then if those are normal to try other tests or should I just request all at the first visit?
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Make sure your iron test was a serum ferritin and then ask if it is above 70. A serum DHEAS, total and free testosterone, LH and Prolactin may be ordered if it seems your hormones may not be normal -- such as irregular periods, acne, mustache. If not, your dermatologist may decide the tests are not necessary. You should go with a list of any medications you have been on the past two to three years and that includes oral contraception pills.
