Hair Loss - thining

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 8/16/2004

Question
Hey Dr. Fisher

I was putting hair thickener in my hair for about a month and 1/2 striaght, every day, with washing my hair maybe every 3days.. After i left it dry one day, i noticed excess thining in the front hairs on the top of my head, which were never there.. I have now stopped putting anything in my hair, except for maybe a little hairspray, which i was doin orginally before i was on a hair thickener rampage. Any chance for those thining hair to grow back thick again, i had a mane on the front of my hair, above my forehead before this.. Its so much thining so fast, a big hit on my confidence..
help put a smile on my face :(.. I have learned my lesson now and will not abuse my hair with tons of hair products.. Looking good is a tough business, especially when one has curly hair like mine.It very hard to style the way i want it.

Also, how do u feel about hair replacement, not worth it and is there a sure fire company out there to regrow hair.

Thanks
Joe

Answer
The question that need to be answered is whether the products you put on your hair are caused the hair loss or there is another cause like: thyroid disease, Lupus, liver disease, kidney disease, medications, over processing of the hair, severe stress, recent surgery, abnormal hormones, going on or off of hormonal therapy. You may wish to have blood work to make sure there is no systemic cause of your hair loss. The only good hair replacement is hair transplant. There are two medications that are FDA approved one is Rogaine and the other is Propecia. However, propecia only works in men. I recommend that you visit your local dermatologist to get a diagnosis of your hair loss so you will know what you should do.
