Question Hey! I am 14 and have dark blonde, kind of light brown hair. I REALLY want to dye my hair a natural red but I want to know what the effects are of dying it. If I get it done, I will get it done at a salon. Anyway, I was wondering if you can tell me if it is connected to health problems or not and how long it will last.
Answer Hello Beth,
Hair color done in a salon is perfectly safe by all means. How long it will last will depend on whether or not you decide to go with a demi-permanent color or a permanent color. Demi-permanent color will last approximately 4-6 weeks and will slowly fade out each time you shampoo the hair. Permanent color will last until it is either stripped off the hair, bleached off the hair or cut off the hair because it is just that permanent. My suggestion is to try the demi-permanent color to begin with as usually color lines come in both types and will usually always carry the same colors to choose from. This way if you decide you do not like the color as well as you thought you would it is not a permanent choice, if you do decide you really like the color you have chosen then you can switch to permanent and know that it is what you want. At the same time I often tell my clients that even if you do like the color of the demi-permanent color it is not always best to go to the permanent as the demi-permanent will not hurt your hair as there is no ammonia in it and when the color actually fades enough to need the process again is usually the same time a permanent color would need to have a touch up so in the end you get the same rich color without the extra chemicals taking a toll on the hair.
I hope this has been helpful with your question, and by going into the salon to get this service done, you have not only made a very wise choice you will also have the opportunity to discuss this with your stylist who will also be able to answer any of your questions and concerns as well. Let me know how it goes and which way you decide to go demi or permanent okay. Thank you and good luck. Red is awesome, it truly is!
The permanent color will not hurt the hair so long as it is always done correctly and by a trained license professional. There is potential for damage when it is not done correctly. Done correctly though, there is no worries.
