Question Hi,
I have very fine hair. Most stylists refer to it as dark blonde/light brown, but it just looks medium brown to me. For years, my hair was highlighted with color (I was told)and it lifted to a warmish but bright blonde highlight. Now I'm told that to get some of the popping blonde highlights I want, it would need to be done with brightener/bleach. Lately a couple of people have highlighted my hair with color and it came out dull, almost burnished, so I'm inclined to believe the bleach may give me a better color. In addition, some of the color has seemed oddly drying, so I'm not so sold on color being less damaging. I am truly concerned about the health of my hair with the texture I have. Do you agree that bleach is the best way to go for a creamier highlight? And do you think it would be safe for my kind of hair? I'd also love your thoughts on the safety of color vs. bleach. Thank you.
Answer Hiya Dana,
Sorry for the delay in the response. I was sick :-( Anyway, all better now so on to your question. I use bleach all the time. I call it "Lightener" so it doesn't sound so scary. As long as the stylist knows a bit about color, the bleach will be great. And if the stylist doesn't understand color, it won't matter what you use.
Bleach when formulated properly, and when using a professional product by a professional is just as safe and effective as color, in my personal opinion. The stylists I work with who don't like bleach, are usually the inexperienced or the ones who don't do much color. It's a fantastic tool in the right hands, and you will LOVE the color.
By the way, my fine haired clients generally prefer the lightener to the color. I don't have fine hair myself so I'm not sure I can explain it like they can but, either way, if the color isn't getting you light or creamy enough, you might as well give it a go. Bleach, just like color, should not be overlapped so when you go in for your re-touch, they will probably only put the bleach on the roots, rather than pull it through all over. But, if your stylist is a good colorist, that will be old news.
Good luck,
dana
