Hairstyling - Hair color for rebonded hair

Expert: Dana Sear - 10/31/2009

Question
Hi Dana,
I have my hair rebonded 2x a year, the most recent one just a month ago. I use henna Powder (Naajo-from India) to color my hair and cover gray hair as I thought this would be safer to use. I notice some breakage from the roots. My gray hair are showing again and I'm thinking of using L'Oreal hair color with no ammonia. Henna seems to make my hair course and wavy and probably caused the breakage after the rebonding chemicals. Would hair color without ammonia be safe to use if I've used henna?  Thanks!

Answer
Hiya Maria,

Your best bet is going to be semi-permanent color, the type that gradually fades in 4 to 6 weeks. Permanent color, even ammonia free still uses hydrogen peroxide to process and if henna is causing breakage, the hydrogen peroxide will too. The only thing ammonia does, is open the hair shaft so the color can penetrate, and honestly, ammonia isn't that hard on your hair. Unless, of course, it is already compromised.

You have to take extra care when combining chemical processes and it's always a good idea to find out which products are compatible. You may want to check with the manufacturer of the rebonding products used on your hair which color products are safe. Your stylist should be able to tell you that and if not, can easily find out.

Good luck,

dana
