Hairstyling - Straight hair that goes curly in rain or when wet (which i don't want)

Expert: Dana Sear - 11/4/2009

Question
Hey i'm a teenage guy who has long  straight hair that stops just at my shoulders, i also have layers sort of. My hair always seems to curl up when it dries after its been wet even the slightest bit. I don't really like how it looks as it gives me a sort of afro appearance and sometimes half of my hair is straight and the other half curly. Can you tell me why this happens, and anyways i could stop it from happening so it stays straight? Preferably without a straightener or any kind of electrical equipment. Thanks

Answer
Hiya Taron,

The reason it happens is because you have some natural curl in your hair. Humidity, perspiration, rain, any kind of moisture in the air is going to cause your hair to curl. There are products designed to help keep hair straight, but without using a hairdryer or flat iron with the appropriate products, your hair is going to curl up when it gets wet.

Nearly every professional product line make straightening balms and smoothing creams but they are designed to help  hold a style. Your best bet  is to get a haircut that looks good curly or straight. Your other options are products and heat styling tools or chemical straighteners. There are quite a few that are very good and very gentle. Iso ManeTamer or Rusk Straightener are two that would solve your problems.

Good luck,

dana
