Hairstyling - highlights darkened too much

Expert: Hairman - 7/2/2009

Question
Hi, I have dark brown mousy hair which I have been getting highlighted in foils to a very light blond color. (He puts me under the dryer for up to 10 minutes after putting in foils then takes foils out and puts some kind of rinse in at the sink and waits a few minutes, checking often, before rinsing out and shampooing and heavy conditioning).

But I grew tired of the "black looking" roots all the time so asked to have the highlights darkened down some.  He did but too much. It is now a flat brown looking color all over my head with no highlights/lowlights that I wanted. I wanted highlights that were more in between.  How can I lighten a few pieces of this already colored hair around my face without coming out with a weird color? Its hard to get an appointment with him to get this fixed and I can't stand it. Thanks, Jen

Answer
Jen,
First of all, you don't want to start lightening pieces yourself. If all you want is slightly lighter than it is now, you can safely wash out some of the deeper tone he put over your highlights. It would lift by itslef in time, but you can speed the result by shampooing with laundry detergent. no scrubbing, just work through for 5-10 minutes and rinse, then condition well. No need to risk chemicals for this. It can be repeated if the first time doesn't do quite enough. Just condition well.
best of luck to you.
