Question
I have been coloring my hair since i was about 15. I am now 18. I have gone back and forth from blonde to brunette. I have had some professional coloring done, but most has been done at home. My hair was not long ago blonde, but my darker roots began to grow in. One day, completly out of my mind, i decided to bleach my hair, thinking it would go well. The bleach was in for no more than 5 minutes before my hair went bad. It was almost white, so the next day, i died it brown. since then, the brown has faded, but a chunk of my hair on top goes about 4-5 inches down, and the breaks off.. its impossible to brush when wet, and when it dries, that chunk always looks dry and fried. I want to die it again, because my current color is horrible. I know you wont recommend servies i can do at home, but i am currently an exchange student in norway, completly broke, and going home to canada in 46 days.. i dont know what to do, and i want to look good when i go home! please help me.. thank you so much

Answer
Caryn,
It's unfortunate that you didn't write me BEFORE you did this. The fact of the matter is you've ruined your hair. There were probably mineral deposits on your hair, most likely from the water or something you've used with metallic salts in it, that reacted with the bleach. I'd wager that it got hot, which would indicate exactly what I'm describing. In any case, this reaction LITERALLY fried your hair. There is nothing that can be done to fix it, as hair can not be repaired once it is damaged. It's a fabric and as such, once it breaks down that's it.
Your only recourse is to cut it considerably. It most likely will not hold colour at this point. You might try a semi permanent or temporary colour on it (although I don't approve of home colour, and doubt that you'll get decent results, given the hair condition).
Other than that, you might try going to a cosmetology school in the area. They usually are very reasonable. Just be aware that nothing will be great. Once the hair starts breaking and matting like that, there's little that can be done for it.  Hopefully it will be a learning experience for the future. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Best of luck to you.
