About Timothy D. Hufnagle
Expertise
I have an extensive background in the music of Daryl Hall and John Oates. I`ve been a devoted fan since 1984, and my collection specializes in the music of these two artists. My "expertise" would span all the way back to the late 1960s (when they did session work with other artists and were in other bands) up to the present day. My "expertise" also includes knowledge of their collaborative efforts with other artists, compilations, singles, and albums. Unfortunately, I can not help anyone who has questions about concert dates (past, present, or future), Hall & Oates souvenirs and memorabilia, radio shows, or bootleg recordings. I also will not answer any questions pertaining to Daryl and John`s personal lives. I'm a firm believer that if you want information on someone`s personal life, go ask them yourself. :-)

Experience
I have been a collector of popular music since I was about 4 years old. I was a professional mobile disc jockey for 4 years when I was in my 20s. I've met both Daryl and John on several occasions. I've interviewed numerous musicians, producers, and industry personnel who have worked with H&O. I am a webmaster for my ongoing research website: PhillyMoods.com

Organizations
I currently belong to the "Hall & Oates All Access Club," and periodically contribute to the online HallAndOates.com Discussion Forum. I also used to be a long-time member of the following three Hall and Oates Fan Clubs (when the organizations were still in existence): "RSI (Rock and Soul International: The Official Daryl Hall and John Oates Fan Club)," "In Touch" (the UK Hall and Oates Fan Club), and "Link" (the Australian Hall & Oates Fan Club).

Publications
For Hall and Oates: I made contributions to "RSI" newsletters, in "Link" newsletters, in *Lexicon* magazine, and in "Elephant Talk" online mailing list digests pertaining to Daryl Hall's work with Robert Fripp (of King Crimson fame). My research was mentioned on the air at KOST 103.5 (Los Angeles, CA) in October 2002. I worked on the 2006 Varese Sarabande CD compilation, "The Philadelphia Years" (I assembled the discography notes along with some other aspects).

Education/Credentials
I have a B.A. in Integrative Arts from the Pennsylvania State University, and my degree focused on Popular Culture and Creative Writing. I also have a M.A. in Popular Culture from Bowling Green State University (OH). I taught popular culture courses while I was a grad student, and after being graduated, was hired as an instructor for the Dept. of Popular Culture. I also worked for the BGSU Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives (one of the largest public archives of popular sound recordings in the USA--second only to the Library of Congress), and for the Ray and Pat Browne Library for Popular Culture Studies.

Question
Hi, Timothy
I hope you don't mind me prefacing my question with a little background.  Since the gentleman who owned the Rosedale Diner (Abandoned Luncheonette) passed away last fall (sadly, his wife/co-owner passed away not long after), I have been fortunate enough to strike up a friendship with his youngest daughter.  I'll actually be attending her wedding this June, and for a gift, I want to give her a copy of "Abandoned Luncheonette" on CD.  Surpisingly enough, she doesn't have a copy of it on CD (or in any other form).  Before she & I became friends, her awareness of the significance of the album cover/title song had been minimal.  She actually hadn't heard the album since she was a small child and had honestly forgotten that the album featured a song about her parents.  She has derived a lot of joy from realizing there are people out there like me who are interested in the story behind her parents' diner, but she still hasn't been able to get her own "official" copy of the album yet (I burned the title song for her).  Therefore, it would mean a lot to me to be able to give her a CD copy that is as much like the original album as possible (containing the lyrics and artwork).  If there is such a CD, finding one with superior sound quality would be an extra bonus.  Do you know of any such product in existence (that I could buy directly, as opposed to in an auction)?  Any recommendations you have would be much appreciated.
Also, a couple "It's a Small World" tidbits...another long-distance friend of mine is Larry the Diner Expert from Massachusetts (who I believe you've had contact with).  And last but not least, my oldest sister, Michelle, has worked in the financial aid department at BGSU for years.  She and her husband have enjoyed living in BG for many years.  I wonder if you ever met her.
Last but not least, I've only spoken with the daughter who worked at the Rosedale once, but she has promised some good Hall & Oates-related stories when I get to meet her in June.  I'll be happy to pass them along if you're interested (refraining from the personal/non-musical stuff, of course).

Answer
Hi Matt,

First of all, thank you for writing!  It was a real pleasure to read your message--it's exciting to me, because I love to do research, and look forward to hearing more in the future from you regarding the Rosedale Diner and the owners' family.  Having said that, though, please pass along my sincere condolences to the family of the owners of the diner on their recent passing.  But also, please pass along my congratulations to their daughter on her approaching wedding!

Second, in answer to your question about where to get an official copy, I hope I can point you in the perfect direction.  The best place for you to go at this point for either a CD of *Abandoned Luncheonette* (or a clean copy on vinyl) would be to go to www.gemm.com.  Enter the title "Abandoned Luncheonette" in the field, and switch the search type to "Title."  I just did a search for you, and found several copies at very reasonable prices.

Third, in answer to your question about which format to get her, in my opinion, you might be best served to get her BOTH a CD and a vinyl copy.  Reason being:  for most of today's listeners, the CD has the clarity, the durability, and the compatibility....the daughter of the owner would be able to listen to the entire album wherever she goes.  Both the CD and LP have the photo of Daryl and John inside the diner sitting at a booth.  BUT the LP has the lyrics and all the original artwork, and the CD does not.

A later CD compilation (released in 1996), entitled *The Atlantic Collection*, also has a really cool image that the daughter would appreciate:  a photo of Daryl and John actually INSIDE the Rosedale (in its dilapidated form) sitting astride the counter stools.

I asked Daryl myself a couple years ago about the images of him and John on the stools and in the booth, and if they were, in fact, taken inside the actual Rosedale.  [Note:  there had been some speculation and even doubt over the years from fans whether or not Daryl and John were actually inside the diner, or at some other abandoned restaurant].  Well, Daryl clarified that by saying "Oh yes" and then continued to tell me that right after they had their pictures taken, the cops had come asking what the hell they were doing there.  Apparently, someone had called the cops on them.

Of course, years later, during the 80s (and the height of their popularity), Daryl, John, (and even the band) actually made a quick trip out to the diner when they were in the Philly area, and someone in their entourage filmed it (and photographed it).  The end of the film shows someone (the owner of the land, I think) chasing them off.  I believe one of the fan club organizers had this clip posted online at one point.  I don't have a copy of that, but wish I did...it was...interesting, to say the least.

Regarding BGSU, it is a small world, indeed.  I don't know if I ever met your sister, as being a grad student (and later, an employee of the university) I rarely, if ever, had to go to the undergrad financial aid area.  But, anything's possible, as BGSU was a close, tight-knit community.  I'm sure your sister and I knew some of the same people, though (six degrees of separation, etc.).

Please say "hi" to Larry the Diner Expert for me, too!  And feel free to send me a private message with your personal contact info, as I would love to hear from you again!

Finally, I apologize for not responding to your message faster.  I am currently co-authoring a coffee-table-style history book on turn-of-the-century postcards of Upper Bucks County and Montgomery County in Southeast PA (I live in the Sellersville region, near Pottstown and North Wales).  We are doing a complete history and catalog of the well-known Berkemeyer and Zeigler cards.  I've been conducting many interviews lately with collectors and long-time residents, so my time at the computer has shortened, and my attention to Hall and Oates-related history has had to temporarily be put on hold (until my manuscript gets submitted to my editor).

Take care!
Tim
