Question QUESTION: I have a puxing 777 and was wondering if this unit can be used as a pager. By this I mean say for my local volunteer fire department. I m a law officer in georgia and use this radio for my everyday use and don't want to carry pager with me also. If this radio will not do this feature what feature do I need to look for in radio for it to be able to be used as a pager?
ANSWER: The first thing to do, Tony, is to find out what frequency is used by the paging system. The frequency range on the Puxing is 136-174Mhz. If the page system is in that range, there is a good possibility that the Puxing can hear it. I'm assuming that the paging system is FM voice and not alpha numeric, Plectron or Quick-Call or one of the newer versions. Some newer paging systems are digital, in which case it won't work.
Since you already have the radio, if the freq is in range, give it a try.

QUESTION: Yes I have the frequency which is the Fire Dept frequency. I can get the page as it goes out but I hear every page. I'm looking for how to program the radio to hear only my pager number which is 144. How do I need to program for this. Is there any other information on the pager I need? Not sure of what system the 911 center uses. They have a Baker 911 radio CAD system.

Answer Tony, I'm afraid that your Puxing is not capable of that. Your pager, which is probably a Minitor, has special electronics to recognize the double tone that is transmitted. Each tone is a different frequency and if the two tones sent, match the two tones programmed into the pager it opens the squelch so you can hear everything after the tones.
This is a very specialized application and there are no Ham handhelds that have that capability.
