Ham Radio/Programming & cloning a two way radio

Question
Hi Chris,

I realize this question isn't exactly about Ham radios, but maybe you can help. I have 2 Motorola two way radios, (model RDU4160d) & I need to have the frequency changed on channel 1 to a custom frequency that the railroad we provide maintenance for uses. I have the frequency, but from what I understand, only a Dealer or radio servicing company can program the frequency we need. Is this correct? Also, would it be possible to have one programmed, and clone the other one ourselves? Would the cloned radio now have the  custom frequency on channel 1, or would it just clone other types of radio settings?

Thanks for your time...

Answer
Your radios may or may not be capable of operating on the frequency you need.  If the operational range of your radios comes close to the railroad freq you want, it might be possible for an expert to make the change.  The change would require overriding the freq lockout of freqs outside the normal operation range of your radio.  Even if you could find someone that was capable of performing the the task, they might not want to do it for legal/licensing reasons.  It's probably not a practical modification.
