Ham Radio - novice asks, 'which shortwave to buy'?

Expert: George Derringer - 12/13/2002

Question
This is probably too trivial a question for your expertise, but you are the only person who mentioned shortwave.
I listen to talk radio and am bored with the selection that I now get(I live in New Jersey).  I had been looking for a radio with better AM reception, narrowing it down to the GE72887(SuperadioIII) and CCRadioPlus(made by Sangean for CCrane).  The CC radio looks better because of the digital aspect, but costs at least 3 times more.
It occurred to me that I could probably get a shortwave for a little more money, but I don't know which to select.
Will a shortwave with AM have comparable reception to that of the CC and GE radios named above?
Can I get a digital with AM, CB, full North American reception (with privately owned stations) as well as Europe for under $200?  What would I be looking for in the specs, something like 'full spectrum' shortwave?
Could you please steer me to sources from which a beginner can learn, and perhaps recommend a radio or two that I could look at?
Thank you so much for any information that you can give me.

Answer
Hi, Pat! I would recoomend a good shortwave radioo insread of a good AM radio like CC Crane! There is more variety and much more political perspective. Please visit www.grove-ent.com for more help and no, I do not work for nor get referal fees from that company! -- George
