Question I know nothing about shortwave but would like to purchase a portable receiver unit to listen to broadcasts. For battery use I prefer AA.
Which of the following would be the better unit :
Sony ICF-SW7600GR
Sangean ATS-606AP
Grundig YB-400PE
Is one of the three makers, in general, a better quality than the others ?
Is there another I should look at ..... I wouldn't want to spend much over $300 but less if I could.
Thanks very much.
Henry
Answer Hi, Henry! All of these are excellent receivers, all under $200 US, but there are differences. No, all three of these manufacturers are very good, but the differences are mostly in the intent of the user. Do you want to listen to music on shortwave? Get the Grundig. If you are more interested in news and real sensitivity to weak signals in a part of the world other than the eastern two-thirds of North America, then get the Sony. The Sangean is a compromise between the two and would be my personal third choice. On the other hand, if you're willing to spend a little more, try a Sangean 909 (also sold as a Radio Shack DX-398 and often on sale). It's around $250 US regularly and it's my every day, everywhere (including vacations abroad) radio. The good news is: You can't go terribly wrong with any of those three radios and you'll be happy with them. For lots of links to radio schedules, visit www.anarc.org. Hope that helps! -- George
