Subject: Dropped I/O Magic 250 Gigabank...

Question
Hi, Chris. My I/O Magic 250 Gigabank was working and then my gf dropped it about 2 feet up and I was able to break the fall/keep it from hitting the floor, but right after, I tried it with 2 different computers and the Blue ON light comes on and it sounds like its working or at least trying to work but is not recognized by any computer.  I don't know what to do...Is there any way to retrieve the files (about 100 Gigs of Music) or fix it?  Thanks.

Answer
If the drive is initializing you should be able to get the data off.
Try testdisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
it doesn't install, and recovered files will be stored in it's win directory. Also files will not have the original name, just a number.
A helpful thing is that you can use it to repair boot sectors, and partitions. Try using it to repair your boot sector.

Also
http://www.runtime.org/
getdataback is a really nice program. It will recover data and will preserve the file names. It also will let you try it to see if it finds your data. If so and you want to recover it you need to buy it then. Well worth it if you ask me.

After you get everyhting off, right click my computer and choose manage, scroll down to disk magement, find your external drive in the bottem box on the right and choose to create partition or format.

You can then copy your data back on. Rememebr to make a backup somewhere.
