Hard Drive Problems/Hard drive

QUESTION: Respected Sir,
Greetings! Hope things good at your end:)
I have this CPU of Compaq D510 Small Form Factor and this hard drive of sea gate model no: ST340015A 40 GB Memory.
Yesterday i turned on the pc and ran a test known as IDE DPS SELF TEST in Bios and i received and error 7 there "replacement of hard drive".Then i reinstalled the windows xp but in the amidst of installation i received a message as Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk maybe damaged.Make Sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated.Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information. You must select a different partition for windows XP ,to Continue press Enter.
Shall i replace the hard drive or any other remedy?

ANSWER: Hi Bilal!

If your drive is bad, then you should replace it.  There is no trick to get around it.  There is no point in trying to install anything on a bad drive - you will most likely continue having increasingly critical issues with the drive and the data.

Feel free to follow up with any additional questions.

Good luck!

QUESTION: Hi there,
How are you? Do You recommend me to put hard drive on another computer and format it and try to install windows xp again? Do you think IDE DPS SELF TEST is sufficient enough to determine that my hard drive has become damaged?

Yes, Dell's diagnostics are sufficient (and recommended) to determine the drive needs to be replaced.

"Do You recommend me to put hard drive on another computer and format it and try to install windows xp again?"

Yes, this is what you will need to do (or restore from a working/valid backup).  You might also take this opportunity to consider upgrading to a modern OS, as XP will reach end of life in a matter of months, leaving XP users unprotected.

Good luck!

I can answer questions about server hardware RAID and general storage for servers and PC's - hard drive issues, troubleshooting, advice, specs, and information. While some apparent drive/RAID array failures can be recovered, I can only provide advice/recommendations in the event of catastrophic data loss. I don't assist in actually recovering from this type of data loss on this forum.

I worked as an analyst in Dell server support for 2 years, and have since worked with many Dell PowerEdge servers. I am currently employed as IT Manager. I am currently ranked in the top 5 All-Time in Server Hardware and Hard Drives in a very popular and large forum similar to AllExperts.

I have a BS in Computer Science and have earned the following certifications: CompTIA Security+, A+, Project+; CIW Web Design, Database Specialist; Microsoft Windows 7; Dell DCSE Server. I am also an expert in Windows 7, Servers, and Hard Drives (I don't normally do XP - not because I don't know it inside and out, but because I have "retired" personal support for XP, and I want to see it die :)).
