Question
Is there a fellowship or training test?  How many years at most does it takes to become a doctor starting from Medical School? I am assuming 4 year in Medical School and at most 5 year in a specialty.

Answer
Dear Henry,

There is no fellowship test.  You can start practice after 1 year of internship, the year after medical school. Specialization in internal medicine or pediatrics requires two more years after internship.  Most fellowships in the subspecialties of internal medicine (cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology etc) require 3 more years.  Surgery requires 4 years after internship, and surgical fellowships are 3 or 4 years. I've forgotten about radiology and dermatology.
