what is the meaning of the name hawai'i?

Aloha,
That is a very good question because Hawai'i is one of the only words in our language that doesn't have a meaning. It is a proper name like Chicago or Detroit.
Wai means water but here it is with 2 ii.
99 % of the words on Hawaiian mean something but Hawai'i does not.
