Hawaii - Hawaiian Funerals

Expert: Malia - 4/2/2008

Question
I will be attending a Hawaiian Funeral for a friend recently lost.  I know not to
wear black but is there anything I could bring to a Hawaiian funeral that would
be customary?

Answer
Aloha,
First of all I am sorry for your loss.
Yes indeed most people won't wear black to a funeral, any aloha wear is fine, flower shirt for men or flower dresses for women. If it is Chinese funeral, don't wear red as that's the color worn at Chinese weddings.
If it is a Hawaiian family, very often they'll wear white.
Often guests bring lei ( flower necklaces ) or an envelope with a money donation for the family ranging between $ 20 and $ 100.
