Question Hi - as a wedding gift, I would like to pay for a volcano tour for my brother and his fiancee, for their honeymoon. They will be staying in Kona for 5 days, so would prefer it to leave from there. Can you tell me the pros and cons of helicopters vs. planes, and what I should make sure the tour includes? Thanks!

What a nice present! They will love it. Blue Hawaii is a serious helicopter tour, you can check them on the web. They will probably also pick you up in Kona to drive to Hilo and then do the tour or sometimes they leave from near Kona ( there is a heliport there too ) so you don' t have to drive to the other side of the island. There are also night tours, you see the lava better but not the rest so a day tour is preferable. The tour should include being able to see waterfalls, canyons, and then the active volcano going into the ocean. The pros are definitely that you can see better, you are lower and can take better turns. The only con is that some people get scared flying over an active bubbly lava field cause the helicopters have glass bottoms and the view is amazing. But stick with a serious company like Blue Hawaii for example. They are safe.
