AboutMalia Expertise Aloha,
I can answer I would say about 99 % of all questions relating to Hawai`i.
Experience I work for tour agencies as a tour guide so have a wonderful island experience especially from the view of travelers and newcomers to the islands. I am also a high school language teacher.
I'm moving to Kona next week with my family, who's family has hawaiian heritage. We were in a discussion of what my name means in hawaiian. I know my name is Scottish and means twin, which is either coincidental or specifically chosen, since I am a twin. I found my name is converted to "Koma" in hawaiian, but I was wondering what the hawaiian name for twin is if there is a such a word?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
Thomas Stewart
Answer Aloha Thomas,
I am not sure where you're moving from but you will love Kona.
Koma is the Hawaiianized-English word of Thomas, Tom or Tommy.
And you're right, the names Tom, Tommy are all from the Hebrew and mean twin. St. Thomas the apostle was supposed to be a twin and the first bearer of this name. In true Hawaiian however the name would be: Mahoe with a line - over the "a" or Mahana also with a line over the a ( but Mahana is more a girl's name.
As for the noun "twin", in Hawaiian twin means also Mahoe, Mahana or even Kulua with a line over the first "u" ( but Kulua is not a name itself )
Hope this helps.
And welcome to Hawai'i,
Malia
