AboutMalia Expertise Aloha,
I can answer I would say about 99 % of all questions relating to Hawai`i.
Experience I work for tour agencies as a tour guide so have a wonderful island experience especially from the view of travelers and newcomers to the islands. I am also a high school language teacher.
Question a friend of mines partner of 14 years just passed away 2 days ago, this friend of mine was born and raised in hawaii, his partner wasnt, i was hoping that i can find a traditional gift from hawaiian customs to give to my friend that would symbolize everyones love for him and his family at this time of mourning, i've googled it and cant find anything related to the topic of gift giving for a mourning family. my question is, is there any gift or anything that someone can purchase that would show there love for a family in this time of great sadness?
Answer Aloha,
First of all I am sorry for your loss. Here in Hawaii we often give flower necklaces (lei) but of course if you're not in Hawaii it's more difficult. However you might be able to find a lei made of kukui nuts or other plants or you could even make your own by buying green plants and twisting them to make them look like a necklace. A book is also good, you can get a book on Pele our lava goddess, or the book "Eddie would go" which talks about one of our heroes here, Eddie Aikau who died saving others. Finally you can get a CD by Israel Kamakawi'wo'ole or Keali'i Reichel, our 2 greatest singers here in Hawaii. I am not sure where you live but if you're on the mainland, you can get them at any Barnes and Noble or they can order it. Same for the books.
We don't have traditional gifts we give at funerals but if you give a family anything reminding them of Hawaii they will appreciate it. Cause anyone from Hawaii who is not in the islands misses them so much that even the smallest memory of Hawaii will make them happy.
Remember Hawaiians believe in the akua (Gods) and your friend is with them now and watches over you all.
Malama pono (take care)
