Hawaii - Moving to Hawaii for the summer

Expert: Malia - 10/20/2009

Question
Hello, I'm a college student at the University of Missouri in the middle of my sophomore year. I'll be 20 this summer (2010) and I'm very interested in moving to Hawaii for the summer for experience/fun/independence/work. I have never been to Hawaii but am interested in working full time somewhere on/close to the beach.

I would prefer to work somewhere that provided lodging as well but if not somewhere where it is affordable.

I'm just starting my research into this possible decision but any information/suggestions would be very helpful!

Answer
Aloha,
Sorry for the late reply.
You have 2 choices, you can move to Maui and stay in Lahaina or to O'ahu and stay in Waikiki.
Those are the 2 locations with all the traffic, stores, restaurants etc and you are likely to find a summer job.
Also both locations are on the beach.

It's difficult to find lodging at a good price, unless you want to be outside the city, but then the commute can be gruesome.
I suggest you try and contact the youth hostels in Waikiki and also you can check the University of Hawaii website to see what they have to offer.
Often the university has short time rentals for students.

There is a youth hostel on Lemon Street which is in Waikiki.
You might also be able to find a roommate and share the costs, so again try through the University. They are serious and you don't want to end up with a creepy roommate.

Finally try the website of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the one for the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.

Hope this helps
Let me know if you have any more questions
