AboutMalia Expertise Aloha,
I can answer I would say about 99 % of all questions relating to Hawai`i.
Experience I work for tour agencies as a tour guide so have a wonderful island experience especially from the view of travelers and newcomers to the islands. I am also a high school language teacher.
Question I would like to make my first trip to Kauai this coming Spring break. I once spent a terrible Spring Vacation on Maui - 1993 - when it rained and rained and rained almost every day for a week. I don't want that to happen again, so I am wondering what part of the island would be the driest....you could answer by naming communities or by direction...northeast, for example. I plan to spend my days hiking, then go loafing on the beach. Hiking trails are where they are, and I may get into rain then, but I'd like my lodging to be in the driest area possible. Thanks for your help!
Answer Aloha,
Yes I understand that you weren't happy because when people come to Hawaii they want sun every day and get really frustrated when the weather is bad, but unfortunately it can happen, especially in the months between November and March.
The South Shores are always the most dry, because the way our winds are the South Shores are leeward shores (against the wind/rain).
So for Kaua'i Poipu on the South Shore is a nice place, or any other place on the South Shore.
Princeville in the North is famous but wetter. Kaua'i is not that big so you can always drive somewhere else but come back to the South to rest in the sun. Even though our islands are small, the weather can be very different depending on what part of the island you are.
Now keep in mind that Kaua'i is called the "Garden Island" because it is very green/wet especially in the middle where we have rainforests.
Hope this all helps
:-)
