Question QUESTION: Hi I'm working on a project all about Hawaii and my question is what do Hawaiians' believe in about afterlife, What is their theory of it?? I have searched all over and have not really found an answer to this question i hope you can help.
ANSWER: Aloha,
The reason you can't find a lot is probably because here in Hawaii we have all religions mixed. Many people believe in God and Gods at the same time. Even Catholics believe in Pele for example, our Goddess of Lava. There are certain rules like "don't take pork meat over the mountain" and lots of people do that. Even me. It's just so set in people's minds since childhood. The ancient Hawaiians believe that the spirits of the deceased watch over us, the "Ali'i" are the chiefs and they watch over us. A lot of places are supposed to be haunted, and some truly are. In general the Hawaiians believe in an afterlife, as in that they watch over their loved ones. The living on the other hand still put fruits and little offerings on old ruins of temples for them.
Hope this helps

QUESTION: Hi i,m working on a Hawaiian project and i was wondering what hawaiian have for a moral or ethical code? Thanks so much for your time!!
Answer Aloha,
Mahalo for filling out the feedback form :-)
Yes Hawaiians have a lot of words they live by.
Here is a good example of it.
The word ALOHA:
A stands for ALOHA: Aloha means friendship, love, hello and good bye.
It is used in everyday phrases and everyone uses it. We also say ALOHA SPIRIT meaning
we believe that love and friendship are entwined.
For the Hawaiians love and friendship are also linked to nature in general and, in ancient times, even sex and love and friendship were one and the same.
L stands for LOKAHI: lokahi means a common goal, people should work together for a common goal and stick to it, also it is important to work together for a good cause
O stands for OHANA: Ohana means family in Hawaiian, not just blood related but also in a general sense, could be friends, anyone whom you care about, and it's important to have those people in your life and give your love, compassion and time to others as well
H stands for HO'OPONOPONO: PONO by itself means righteous and the word ho'oponopono means that once you're done talking about something you're done. Let's say 2 people have an argument, they sit down, everyone says what was going on, and then if the 2 people don't come to an agreement, they will still be ok with it cause everyone said their point of view and then you do ho'oponopono, you are done with it, you don't go like weeks later and say "I told you that time blabla", no you're done.
A nice life philosophy right?
I have always loved it and that's one of the reasons why we here in the islands are doing so well, all colors, all religions mixed and no problems really.
Like Obama says, we should all follow Hawaii's example, it is so diverse and so remote in these waters, we need to take care of ourselves, we are in the middle of the ocean here, on a big rock and if we cannot get along, then no one else will come rescue us, so we try our best.
