Hawaii - on the beach

Expert: Malia - 2/20/2009

Question
Is there nice affordable bungalow type places to stay on the beach?  And is it safe?  I'm referring to Oahu.  And aloha.

Answer
Aloha,
O'ahu is very safe, all of Hawai'i is. Of course bad stuff happens everywhere but Hawai'i is one of the safest places around. I mean where do you go right? You can't escape if you do something wrong.
Now as for bungalows on the beach, on the North Shore, you can rent houses or villas that are flat on the beach, on the South Shore and Waikiki that's not possible, cause we have all the hotels and condos on the beach. After all Honolulu is the 11th biggest city in the US.
So on the North Shore where it's quieter, yes you can, however they are pricey cause basically you are renting a whole house or villa, so unless you are with a group and everyone pays their share, it will be expensive. We have one camp at Mokule'ia ( used to be a military camp ) and there you can rent a simple room or cottage with no amenities and it's right on the beach. We go there once a year with our students, it's simple no comfort but the ocean is a jump away and it's cheap of course. So check it out on the web if you like. Camp at Mokule'ia. Other than that sorry everything else will be in the hundreds $ range.
