AboutMalia Expertise Aloha,
I can answer I would say about 99 % of all questions relating to Hawai`i.
Experience I work for tour agencies as a tour guide so have a wonderful island experience especially from the view of travelers and newcomers to the islands. I am also a high school language teacher.
Question Hi, my wife and I are planning on moving to Kauai to fulfill our dream of getting away from the rat race of los angeles. how difficult will it be for a 10 year old to fit in, with schools, sports, socailly? Will it be hard for an outsider to fit in at that age?
Answer Aloha,
Wow from LA to Kaua'i. That is one big change. Kaua'i is a very remote island.
Why not O'ahu or Maui, hustling and bustling but still a village compared to LA.
Not to say that Kaua'i isn't beautiful. It is a gem, pristine beaches, low crime rate, nature all year long.
As for fitting in, people here in Hawaii are wonderful, friendly and open minded, if you have an open heart, respect for nature and people different than you (which I am sure you have living in such a cosmopolitan place like LA) you will fit in in a heartbeat and so will your child.
Schools are small and what we call the "Aloha spirit" well and alive and your child will bloom here. Kids don't make differences between races, religions or even body image here. We are all ohana (family).
Let me know if you need any more help.
As from my own experience, I wouldn't want to raise my 8 year old anywhere else on this planet.
