AboutJohn Expertise Although I no longer live in Hawaii, I did live there for 10 years, and still have connections in the islands.
I lived on O`ahu, and have the most knowledge about this island. I`m limited on the other islands, but can steer you in the right direction.
Experience I'm originally from the Mainland, but was there for 10 years, and we were integrated into the local scene. My wife taught at public school, I paddled outrigger canoes, and my daughter is a hula dancer.
Education/Credentials Just 10 years of living on O'ahu.
Question QUESTION: My wife and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in late July with our 11 year old son. We have all been to Oahu before and I have been to Maui. We want a vacation that is relaxed and relaxing. Have been planning on Kauai. Had been looking at a condo rental in the Kapaa area but heard it can be congested in that area. Still, we had focused on that area because it seemed to have the most to do, most restaurants, etc.
Would a different area of Kauai be better for us or would you suggest a different island altogether? We want this to be a special time together. We had a tough summer last yuear with major health issues and this is our first extended time away from home in a long time.
Thanks so much.
ANSWER: I've only been to Kauai twice, and once was when I was a child myself, so I can't offer you much on that island, and I'm not a big fan of Kauai, mainly due to congestion reports.
If it were me, going with an 11yo boy, I would choose the Big Island. Stay in Hilo, which is slower and more relaxing than Kona (also cooler and more rainy, however).
The reason is: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If walking is an issue, most of the really interesting stuff can be seen from inside your car, or at most is less than a 100 yard walk.
If walking is not an issue, there are lots of trails, lava tubes and lava fields to explore.
Finally, since the Big Island IS more populated, if the need arises, health care should be more available.
Keep in mind that this is my opinion. You asked for my two cents, so here they are <clink, clink>. <smile>

QUESTION: Thanks so much. Your information is helpful. Would Hilo be the place to stay on the big island?
Thanks again.
Answer That's where *I* would stay. Keep in mind that Hilo is on the windward side, so will be cloudier and cooler than the Kona side. Hilo will me more like Kaneohe/Kailua on O'ahu, while Kona will be more like Waianae.
Hilo will be cheaper and is closer to the volcano.
