Hawaii - Moving to Oahu

Expert: Malia - 7/7/2009

Question
Yes, I have been looking into moving to oahu with my family for sometime now.  My first question would be is there any remodeling or construction work on oahu?  My husband specializes in nice trim work and has a portfolio.  He can do anything from the ground up and has been a sub contractor for about 11years . We would love to move there for a change and know that the living expenses or at least triple Michigans.. I have found a couple places on oahu for around 2,000.. Do you know how much it would cost to move there taking the car and belongings with us?  Thanks so much!

Answer
Aloha,
Here I am, sorry for the late reply. I flew back from Europe and it's a long trip.
Now I am back in Honolulu. First of all, there are many buildings in construction now. We are constantly adding new skyscrapers and new homes on all islands. So it shouldn't be too hard for him to find work. We are also building a new kind of mini Disneyworld here right now. As for a place around 2,000, yes that is the normal rate for an apartment that's nice and in a good neighborhood. Hawaii is expensive indeed, but it's worth every penny. As I mentioned before, I just came back from Europe and the mainland, and nothing beats coming back to this wonderful place. We are work hard to be able to live here, but it's a wonderful place to live. Tell your husband to check out the website of the city and county of Honolulu (responsible for all islands) and he can see what is being done here for now. As for bringing all your things in a container, I did the same almost 20 years ago and it was actually cheaper than buying it all here so I think you should bring your things, especially your car. Matson is our biggest shipping partner here, check with them.
Let me know if you need any more help and again I am sorry for the late reply.
