Question
Dear Malia,

We are planning our very first trip to Hawaii in October, with our 2 y.o. son. For some reason we picked Kauai... But since it's our first visit to Hawaii, we have no idea which part of Kauai to choose.

Our first and only concern is actually a beach. Who needs crowded pool if there is the Pacific at it's best just few steps away! We would like to know which beach will be calm and placid at the beginning of October, with no or little waives, so our son won't get scared and will be able to play at the edge of the water. Would you be so kind and recommend us Kauai beach perfect for 2 year old explorer? Thank you so much!

Best regards, Yulia & Family

Answer
Aloha Yulia,
Kaua'i is a beautiful island and you will love it.
It is very quiet however so you might want to plan a one or two day trip to Maui or O'ahu.
But Kaua'i is very lush and green and safe.
As for the waves, in October the waves start to shift.
In the winter, we have high waves on all North shores, in the summer on the South shores.
So in October you could have little or no waves on the North Shore one day and then higher ones the next day.
So you might have to play it by ear.
Kaua'i is not too big so you can always drive to another part of the island with less waves.
I am not sure where you are staying, usually Poipu on the South is quiet whereas Nawiliwili Coast and also the beaches near Princeville can be rougher.
And if worse comes, you can still stay at the pool. Most hotels have seawater
beaches so they are not so full of chlorine and in October, since it's off season, the hotels and pools of hotels shouldn't be too crowded.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Malia
