The text above is a follow-up to ...

-----Question-----
similar to what U provided to another inquiry...we are getting a new box puppy soon.  the pup comes from a pedigree line which shows several Hawaiian names:  Hina Umiamake (grandparent) to Ho'AmallJHLA Mata, NA KOA TAO, Hana Hou's Pu'wailkoa, Hana Hou Ehu Wa1hne; Hana Hou's Pu'wailkoa.

we want to follow w/ a Hawaiian name too and would like to know about meanings & pronunication of the above ancestors, plus of several names we're considering.  We live on the North Carolina coast (5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean).  Also, what is the Hawaiian translation of just " dog," and how do U pronounce KOA ( key-o-a ?):

here are some example names:
OBX's (maybe insert one of the above ancestors...but don't know meanings )Kekoa (meaning brave, the soldier (or KOA, for brave, bold fearless)Cody

or 2. OBX's Hu'en (does that mean mischievious & how do U pronounce it)Kai (for sea & how do U pronounce ) then the Hawaiian meaning for dog.

3. or Koa Kai +(meaning for dog

thanks)
-----Answer-----
Aloha,
Congrats on your new family addition.
Ok let me help you here with a few names.
First of all there are some mistakes in the names you wrote.
We have no J and no X in the Hawaiian language, we only have i,o,u,e,a, then h,k,l,m,n,p,w. No other letters.
Koa is wood and kai is ocean.
Koa is pronounced : like "go" but with a "k" sound, then "a" like "America".
Kai is like " my" with a "k"
The word for dog is "ilio" = "e" - "lee" - "o"

for the other names:
a grandparent is " tutu kane or tutu wahine
Hana hou means again
kekoa means the courageous one
koa is means also brave or fearless
other names could be:
laka = gentle
maka = favorite one
makana = gift
miki = alert, quick
pua = flower
pono= righteous
pomaika'i = lucky one
uakea = misty

if you like any of these let me know and I will tell you how to pronounce those too.
Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have any more questions so I can look some more into some names for you

Answer
Aloha,
Hana hou means = again, one more time
Hina Umiamaka = she is the goddess of the moon then maka means = desire or eyes, I am not sure about "umia" , umi = ten ( the number 10 )
so together could mean = born the 10th day of the moon maybe?? and desired child ( dog in this case )
as for "mata" and "tao" those have to be Polynesian names bbut not Hawaiians since we don't have a "t" in our alphabet
it could be again maka ( mata ) and kao = tao , kao meaning kaohu misty
Hope this helps
