Subject: Moving to Big Island by ship?

Question
Aloha!  We are moving to the Big Island with our 4 kids, 3 dogs and 2 cats.  We would also like to bring our chickens, if possible!  We are aware of the quarantine laws and have started getting the dogs and cats ready.  I know that most people move their belongings by freight and themselves & their pets by plane, but I have heard it is possible to move ourselves & pets there by ship.  Do you know if it is possible to get there that way and where I can find more information on it?
Mahalo!

Answer
Aloha,
First of all let me tell you that moving with your pets is a beautiful thing to do. Many people just leave their pets behind and that is very sad. I am not sure about the chickens though, especially with the avian flu. You might  have to find another home for them. We moved to Hawaii with our cat as well and she lived with us another 7 years.
At that time there were 4 months of quarantine, now this is past fortunately.
If you get chips implanted in your cats and dogs, you can bring them to Hawaii right away.
As for bringing them by ship, I am not sure about the laws. However contact MATSON, they are the biggest freight carrier in Hawaii and basically ship everything everyday everywhere.
If they can't help ( which I am sure they can ) try to contact the Maritime Department of Hawaii, the Immigration Office at the airport and finally the Hawaiian Humane Society.
If you still have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me again and I will try to find out more for you.
Malia
