Question Aloha Malia, I am planning a vacation in October for my mothers 70th birthday. We will be staying in Waikiki at the Sheraton and I would like to rent a convertable one day and drive to some of the beautiful scenic drive I have heard do much about can you give me directions and hints on where to take my family. Oh! by the way my mom is a very active 70 and loves to eat, ride, see the sites and shop. Thank-you. D
Answer Aloha,
How nice of you to do that for your Mom.
In one day you can drive around the whole island.
Start around 9 AM and you can be done by 5 PM.
Start by driving along Kapiolani Park, then up Diamond Head Road, down Kahala Ave. There are many Vista points along the way. Then take H1 East along Kalaniana'ole Hwy. and pass Hanauma Bay, Makapuu Lookout and down into Waimanalo Town. Stay on that road until you reach Kailua, the intersection of Castle Hospital and Pali Hwy. There take a left and then again a right on Kamehameha Hwy which wil lead you all the way to the North Shore past Hau'ula, Ka'a'a'wa to Laie and Kahuku where you can eat corn and shrimps on the street that are excellent.
Continue on to see the famous beaches of Sunset and Waimea and finally the town of Hale'iwa.
There you can stop for shopping and dessert ( shave ice ).
Then come back through the middle of the islans ( you cannot go ALL the way around, there is a military break at Kaena Point and you would have to turn back )
Through the middle of the islans, you will pass coffee plantations and pineapple fields and can visit Dole Plantation and eat pineapples.
Then drive back via H2 and then take H1 West back into Honolulu and Waikiki.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
